Open Hands

*This is just something I shared at a recent shower I attended*

We all know women who just exude motherhood. They look and act like moms way before they ever have children. They are the people every one's kids flock to and the first thing others say to them is "you are going to make a great mom." I was never one of those women, not take away from my love of being a mom, but I just didn't have that aura about me like some women do.

In first Samuel there is a woman named Hannah who is one of those women. She lives and breathes motherhood. Unfortunately, the scriptures tell us that for years and years Hannah tried to conceive a child. After many failed attempts at motherhood , Hannah finally prayed this prayer "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life..." (1 Sam. 1:11).

Later in the chapter we see where the Lord answers her prayer,

"19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."

21 When the man Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow, 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."
23 "Do what seems best to you," Elkanah her husband told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. 25 When they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, "As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD. 27 I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there."

Just picture this scene with me for a moment. Hannah is walking hand in hand with what is probably her three year old little boy, Samuel. Samuel does not know where he is, or why he is there. He is probably asking her "Where are we, Mommy? Why are we here?" Every question he asks is like a knife in her heart. How could she possibly explain this to him? How would his little mind ever understand? Can you imagine the tension she must have felt between being obedient to her God and clinging tightly to the love of her baby boy? As she gets closer to the priest I can only imagine the pain she must be feeling. Pain so deep she must want to physically double over. I can almost feel the weight of the sobs she is holding inside. In my mind I can see her unwrap Samuel's tiny fingers from her own and hand him over to Eli. I can picture her kneeling in front of Samuel with her hands on his face one last time as she prays this prayer over him: "Then Hannah prayed and said:

"My heart rejoices in the LORD;

in the LORD my horn is lifted high.

My mouth boasts over my enemies,

for I delight in your deliverance.

2 "There is no one holy like the LORD;

there is no one besides you;

there is no Rock like our God."...

6 "The LORD brings death and makes alive;

he brings down to the grave and raises up.

7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth;

he humbles and he exalts

8 He raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

he seats them with princes

and has them inherit a throne of honor.

"For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's;

upon them he has set the world.

9 He will guard the feet of his saints,

but the wicked will be silenced in darkness.

"It is not by strength that one prevails;

10 those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.

He will thunder against them from heaven;

the LORD will judge the ends of the earth.

"He will give strength to his king

and exalt the horn of his anointed."

11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest."

So what are we to take away from this story? Certainly, the challenge is not to give your children over to the church. As someone whose husband works for the church -- Don't do that! We do not want your children to raise. :) There is a challenge though, and I found two I'd like to share.

One, Hannah knew the gift was not hers to keep before the gift was even given. She set out to bring glory to God with what he gave her before He even answered her prayer. Gifts from God are given to those who receive with open hands. In His goodness, He does this because the true gift lies in the glory being given back to God. I can't help but wonder if God was just waiting all those years for Hannah to ask for a child with open hands rather than a tight grip.

Two, Hannah knew the God she was handing her son to. We see it in her prayer. She knew the power he held. She knew He held the universe in his hands. He had the power over life and death and yet still loved and cared for heart. She knew He held the strength of all these things and was still her strength as well. You see, when we really know God's character and trust that He is who He says he is, we have the ability to be open handed with His gifts to us -- even our children.

There will be times when you will wish you could drop your child off on the doorsteps of the church, and there will be times when you will feel the tension that Hannah felt between obedience to your God and a tight grip around your baby.

Hannah had an eternal focus. Oh, how she must have enjoyed the moments she had with Samuel, but Hannah knew God's plan for Samuel had eternal affects.

So, enjoy your moments. Relish in them. Just don't lose the eternal focus. Have an open hand with your child so that through both of you -- God will be glorified.

Garage Sale 101

Okay, so I've been to my share of garage sales lately to find inventory for Lila's Pockets. After my outings today I decided to share some of my insight on how to have a successful sale. In no particular order, here are my tips:

1. The majority of garage salers don't want to spend more than $10 on an item. If you've got something that's worth more than that, sell it on Craigslist. You will get a much better offer there.

2. Don't sell antiques at a garage sale! Sell them to an antique dealer or on Craigslist.

3. Clothing shouldn't be more than $1 -- you've been wearing it for years!

4. Children's shoes should be no more than $2 -- your children have been wearing them and who knows what they've stepped in along the way!

5. Put your stuff in the driveway (think "drive" sale as oppose to "garage" sale -- people are more likely to stop if they can see what you have).

6. Put a price on everything! You will lose buyers if they have to ask how much something is.

7. Don't be offended when someone offers you less -- if it's within a few bucks -- sell it. The idea is to get rid of stuff.

8. Signs are very helpful -- if people have to search for you, they will just be irritated with you when they do find you.

9. Throw trash away. If you are selling something that's dirty or obviously broken - THROW IT OUT - or put it in a pile marked "free"

10. Keep in mind -- the idea of a garage sale is not so much to make a ton of money, but to get rid of your junk. Basically, you could and probably should be paying people to haul your stuff away, but instead you get to make a little cash in the process. The less you value your stuff; the more money you will probably make.

Obviously, you can sense some sarcasm in my writing, but hopefully you get the idea. I will be having my garage sale in two weeks so I'll have to let you know how it goes. Get out there -- there are some great treasures to be found.

After laying my son's clothes out for him this morning he came running into my room stark naked. I asked him what he was doing and he said, "Mom, I'm making sure the bugs don't get me 'cause I'm naked." I said, "what are you talking about?", and he replied, "When bugs get into your house they like to get you when you're naked."

Some of you may remember my Starbucks Chocolate deal at Target that I got a few months ago. Well, it happened again today! At Kroger you can get $1/1 coupons from the tear pad in the candy isle (I take a few every time I go in) for any Starbucks chocolate. Right now, Target has their Starbucks truffles (2pk.) marked down for $.90! I got 25 (I use these for favors at parties or put them in gift bags with other goodies) and used 25 coupons giving me $2.50 overage for all those candies. It was awesome! I found the truffles on an end cap near the pharmacy so I hope that helps. Let me know if any of you found this deal, too!

Chuck E. Cheese and Jesus are Not the Same

A few weeks ago my daughter experience one of the most traumatizing moments of her life. She came face to face with what apparently is her worst nightmare --- Chuck E. Cheese. I don't blame her, I have always had a very, strong aversion to any person dressed in a large animal costume. There isn't much else on this planet that makes me more uncomfortable. Anyway, my mom decided to take the kids there one afternoon, and quickly realized by the high, pitch shrills of my daughter that their stay would not last long. For days my daughter told everyone she came into contact with that "I don't like Chuck E. Cheeses. He scare me. I cry at Chuck E. Cheeses." If we passed a Chuck E. Cheese in the car the crying would begin all over again. If Chuck E. Cheese was advertised on television she would inevitably tell you the whole story from start to finish. Needless to say, we will not be going to Chuck E. Cheese for many years to come. The story is cute and funny if you end it there, but my child took it to another level this weekend. My mom was rocking and singing "Jesus loves me" to my daughter before bed. My daughter sat straight up and said. "I don't like Jesus. He scare me." My mom quickly tried to correct her and find out why she would say such a thing. My daughter, as serious as a two year old can be said, "My don't like Chuck E. Jesus, he scare me. He got big eyes!" So, not only has Chuck E. Cheese scared her for life, but now her theology is a mess, too! She now knows Chuck E. Cheese and Jesus are not the same --- and this is now what we hear 40 times a day now. "They not the same, Chuck E. Cheeses and Jesus are not the same."

Whoa...I haven't done a Deals to Meals post is quite some time. I apologize, but honestly there haven't been deals like this in a while. It has come to my attention that some may not know exactly what to do with the almost FREE chuck steak from Target this week. Here's one of favorite recipes:

Chuck Steak Italian Style

2lbs. chuck steak

1 envelope of onion soup mix

1 can peeled tomatoes

1 tsp. oregano

1/2 tsp. pepper

Garlic to taste

2 Tb. oil

worcestershire sauce to taste

Put oil in pan. Place meat in oil and cover with remaining ingredients. Simmer on low for 1 1/2 hrs. I usually serve this over mashed potatoes. It's delicious!

One of Life's Ridiculous...

In describing my blog I say something to the effect that we will dive from life's most serious issues to the ridiculous, because so often that's the way my day falls. Well today here is one of the ridiculous (sorry if this is offensive to some -- we use the anatomically correct names for body parts with our children):

My daughter (just turned 2) and I were putting together a Disney Princess puzzle. She would pick up a piece and I would ask her what piece she was holding. For example, she would have a piece of red hair and say "Ariel". So, she picked up another piece and I asked her what she had, and she responded very enthusiastically, "I've got Cindabella's bagina!" Sure enough, she had a piece of Cinderella from the waist down. Kids can be so literal. I haven't laughed that hard in a very long time.

So I went to Walgreens today. Before you go in know this: there is an Easy Saver catalog in the front of the store. These are filled with IVC's (instant value coupons) that you only need to use one of no matter how many of the products you buy. These are store coupons so you can stack them with manufacture coupons. I have to say, it's been a while since I've had a coupon high like this! Walgreens is now on my radar. Okay, I know this is going to SHOCK some of you, but I am foregoing CVS this week and trying out the Walgreens thing. My plan is to get free shampoo and conditioner, get paid for coffee-mate creamer and Glade air fresheners, and pay nothing for diapers! Since I NEVER post a scenario that I haven't tried myself (I hate getting peoples hopes up if something doesn't work out). So, I will be going tomorrow...stayed tuned and I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry I've been MIA for the last couple of days. My mom has our kids so my husband and I have been focused on one anther. :) However, yesterday we went to Stein Mart and they were having a ridiculous sale on shoes! A huge selection of their spring/summer shoes were %75 off - they must be from last season. I got a pair of black, patten leather Liz Claiborne sandals ($54 regularly) for $12! Good Choice; Bad Choice

Life is all about choices. I've been thinking a lot about this lately. The direction our lives go have so much to do with our choices and the choices of the people closest to us. Good choice = reward; Bad choice = consequence. At least that's what we try to teach our children (we do a little thumbs up; thumbs down routine - it's cute - you have to see it, I guess). Oh man, if it were only that simple, right? The problem is that as life gets more complicated so do our choices. Choices affect not only us, but the people we love, and ultimately our relationship with God. They affect not only the present moment, but our futures as well. Then there are always those times in our lives when we are questioning the choices we made, wondering what life might have been like if we'd made a different choice. Here's what I've come to understand about choices. God does have a best for us. He does have a plan and purpose, and we do have to choose this. In saying that, one wrong choice, however big it may be, does not keep God from doing something awesome in your life. Whether your choice ended with a baby, a divorce, or great pain for someone you love, it does not mean it's the end all for God's plan in your life. Don't get me wrong -- there will be consequences for sin, but God does not just leave you there to wander aimlessly just because you took a turn off of his "original" plan for your life. I can tell you from experience, that God can take the most incredibly painful situation and actually have you come to a place where you thank Him for allowing it to happen in your life. It may not happen for many, many years, but what was once a sharp detour off the path of God's will has somehow miraculously become God's best for your life. Here's the part to remember --- after a "bad" choice has been made there must be a "good" choice to follow it. The only way to experience God's best in your life is choose to walk back to the path God has for you -- it may look different than before, but it is still there, nonetheless. If you are someone suffering the consequences of someone else's "bad" choice, choose now to follow after God and His faithfulness. He will redeem your situation, but you must choose to follow Him rather than your own anger and bitterness. I am thankful for the paths God has taken me down -- pain and peace -- hurt and joy -- confusion and clarity -- my choice is Him, no matter what the crossroad, my choice is clear because He has been faithful time and time again. Whatever your choice has been in the past; choose Him now. He will redeem it all.

Cookbook for a Penny!

Today I went to Borders, it's a weekly outing in our home. Our kids love the children's section, and it gives us a chance to read a new to them. Anyway, on my way out I looked in the sales section, and I found a book that was price at $0.01; no kidding! The title is World Cuisine/Italy (II) by Antonello Colonna and Carlo Cracco. It is VERY authentic so some of recipes I won't even attempt, but their are some that look delicious. So, if you want a new cookbook or know someone who would, head over to Borders and look this book up!

Being Right vs. Being Content

About a year ago my husband and I went through the most difficult time of our life together. We were in a situation where we were so positive that what we were a part of was not of God, and yet we were still feeling as though God was telling us to be a part of it. We were treated unfairly, unjustly, and harshly. However, the Lord never gave us the freedom to express what we were feeling, or how we perceived our situation. We sought so much counsel, and advice from wiser men and women that our brains truly reached their capacity to hold anymore information. This difficult trial finally came to an end, thankfully. However, we never got justification or vindication. If you've ever been in a situation where you feel so completely right, and so completely misunderstood, than you know how frustrating that was for us. I am definitely the more opinionated between my husband and myself (some might say mouthy, but I preferred opinionated). Walking away quietly without explanation or justifying our actions was so hard for us. However, I am so thankful for what we learned through that experience.

First, trust your husband to lead. If he fails, that's okay. He will know better for the next time, because their will be a next time. If he doesn't fail, by all means, tell him how proud you are of him!

Second, God does not need our mouths to vindicate for Him. Use the least amount of words, hear your voice less than anyone and you will probably make the point God wants you to make. He is perfectly capable of letting the truth be known all on His own. For me to assume otherwise is not only ignorant, but disobedient.

Third, pleasing Jesus is the only thing that matters. Being right is so far down on the list of what matters in life. If no one but Jesus ever knows what you've done right, that is the only person that needs to know.

And lastly, be content. Move on, and and don't dwell on the past. Be happy for where God moves you and happy for where God takes your adversaries. If you don't --- you won't move forward with God, in fact, you will have learned absolutely nothing from your experience.

I can tell you a year later, we are so amazed by God's provision for our lives. He had such purpose in that trial. It brought us to where we are now; our marriage is richer and deeper because of it, and we know Him more completely. We would do it again in a heartbeat. We have gotten some vindication. Many have since called and asked forgiveness and justified our position. The interesting thing is, we don't need it. It doesn't matter anymore. God is God. Whether people see that we were right or wrong doesn't change who God is, and how faithful He has been to us. So I leave you with this thought: Maybe God isn't as concern about people knowing you are "right", as He about people knowing who you serve.
